Matthew was a decorated Naval Officer and a Veteran of Desert Shield and other foreign conflicts. He retired from the Navy in 2001 after serving 20 years. He was united in marriage to Michelle (Shelley) Schutt on May 4, 2002. This union was blessed with 3 beautiful children - Nathan, Lauren and Parker. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Johnston. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed war gaming and being with his family. He was a devoted husband and father.

Matthew is survived by his wife and children; mother, Catherine Severns of Durham, NC; father, Rudolf (Diana) Severns of Cottage Grove, OR; brother, Christopher (Brenda) Severns of Seattle, WA; sister, Jennifer Fox of Telluride, CO; brother, Gregory Severns of Greensboro, NC; mother-in-law, Suzanne Schutt of Urbandale, IA; father-in-law, Melvin (Linda) Nixon of Des Moines, IA; brothers-in-law, Michael Schutt and Todd (Kathy) Schutt of Phoenix, AZ; nephew, Nicholas Schutt and nieces Lena and Abby Severns; several other relatives and many special friends.

Visitation will be Friday, August 6 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 6270 Merle Hay Road in Johnston. Services will be held Saturday, August 7, 10:00 a.m. at the church, followed by a luncheon.

The Matthew E. Severns fund has been established for his children at Wells Fargo Bank.

He will be lovingly remembered and missed. We are comforted by the peace that he is at rest in his Savior's arms.
