Mervin "Bud" Thompson of Johnston passed away on July 24, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, July 28th at St. Paul Presbyterian Church in Johnston. Burial was Monday at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Bud was born on April 8, 1924 in Lone Rock, Iowa to George and Eva Blanchard Thompson. He was a long time resident of Johnston and member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church. There he lovingly cared for the building and grounds, served as an elder, and was head usher for many years. He served in the Air Force from 1943 until 1946 as a pilot and flew C-47's then trained navigators at Selman Field in Monroe, LA. Upon discharge, Bud was a Captain. After his military service, he was a pilot for Eastern Airlines. Bud retired from John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny after 30 years as a toolmaker/precision grinder operator. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. Bud could repair and restore almost anything to working order.
Survivors include a sister Donna Jones of Canon City, CO., daughter Karla Hansen (Ismael) of Clive and two sons Brian (Mary) Thompson of Ames and Kevin Thompson of Des Moines; two stepdaughters Sandy Orth of Johnston and Sue (Harry) Lake of Marietta, GA.; six grandchildren and five step grandchildren; four great grandchildren and six step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, wife Berdyne and their three infant children, and wife Nita Strauss Thompson.
