Robert Burns Mossman, 64, died of complications of diabetes on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, September 13 at West Des Moines United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton, IA.
Robert Burns Mossman was born March 12, 1943 to Keith and Becky (Vaughan) Mossman. He grew up in Vinton and graduated from the University of Iowa with both undergradutate and law school degrees. He began his career in St. Paul, MN. as an attorney for Counsel’s Office of the Internal Revenue Service. Later, he served as the District Counsel for the IRS in Des Moines from 1978 to 1982 before joining the firm of Nyemaster, Goode, West, Hansell and O’Brien in 1982. At the time of his death, he was a shareholder in the Tax, Estate Planning and Employee Benefits Department of that firm. Burns was a member of the American, Iowa State and Polk County Bar Associations.
Since the age of fourteen Burns faced the challenge of living with diabetes. Characteristically, he turned this challenge into a commitment to helping others through his work with the American Diabetes Association. He was a past member of the National Board of Directors, past chair of the Iowa Board of Directors and past member of the Board of Directors for Camp Hertko Hollow Children’s Diabetes Camp. Also characteristically, Burns refused to let the disease get him down, and lived his life at full speed, with joy and optimism. Sixteen years ago Burns was given the loving gift of a kidney by his brother, Mark. Burns’ commitment to organ donation was demonstrated in his current chairmanship of the Board of Directors for the Iowa Donor Network and even his own donations made at the time of death.
At a very young age, Burns went to his first Iowa football game with his dad, and he became a loyal and fierce Iowa Hawkeye fan. His loyalty continued throughout his life, and as a season ticket-holder for over 25 years he attended all home games. He was also loyal to the University of Iowa Law School which he served as the class agent for 1968. He had a very special appreciation for the University of Iowa Hospitals and all the doctors and nurses who cared for him through many successful surgeries.
Burns loved playing golf, especially with his father, brothers and friends. He was past president of the Des Moines Golf and Country Club and a member of the Des Moines Golf Educational Foundation Board of Directors. He improved the community of West Des Moines through his past work on the Board of Directors of the WestParks Foundation.
Burns brought enthusiasm and commitment to all the activities in his life. He gave 100 percent to everything he did. His vitality enhanced the lives of all those around him
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Nancy of Des Moines; daughter, Ann Garside and her fiancé, Gary Petersen of Albuquerque, NM; father, Keith Mossman of Vinton; brother, Hugh (Barb) Mossman and niece Taylor of Boise, ID; brother, Mark (Kathy) Mossman, nephew, John (Shelley) Mossman and great niece, Chloe of Vinton; nephew A.
